How to Get Your GED in 4 Steps

The process to get your GED is pretty straight-forward; find practice materials, study, take the test, get your GED. The difficult part is all the hard work you have to put in. Follow our step-by-step guide to help you get your GED!

1. Find practice materials

The easiest way to gain access to online practice materials is to create a MyGED account. Look under the "study" tab on your dashboard to find study guides, practice tests, FAQ sections and testing tutorials.

Thousands of free materials are online. Our Magoosh blogs offer a wealth of useful information including practice and testing guides, study tips, scheduling outlines and so much more. Search under "free GED practice test" and "free GED study guides" to find options for GED practice materials.

Do not neglect your local library! Look for tutoring programs, adult learning classes or computer-based lessons – any of which can help build skills found on the GED.

Your library is also a great place to find GED reading materials. Look for books in the 1060-1260 Lexile range. Focus on nonfiction reading that cover the topics of science, social studies or workplace information.

2. Study and prepare

According to GED testing services, test-takers study for an average of 3-8 months before taking the exam. Determine a timeline that will best help you get your GED, and stick to it! Aim to study 1-2 times a day, for 40-60 minutes each time. Many tips and guides are available for online, find a method that works best for you.

If you are interested, paid programs and classes can also be found through GED Testing Service. Search through a list of local testing centers to locate the one nearest you. Study tools and classes might even be free! Your prep center can also put you in touch with a teacher if you are interested in one-on-one tutoring.

3. Take the test

When you are ready, schedule your GED tests through your MyGED account. Locate your nearest testing center and begin scheduling your exam. You can take one subject test at at time or all in one day. Create a testing schedule that works best with your personal timetable.

Brush up on last-minute tips the week prior to testing, and gather all materials needed for testing day.

4. Get your GED

Successfully pass all four subject tests and you get your GED!

Your test scores are available within 3-24 hours after testing. GED test scores are divided into three categories: passing, GED College Ready and GED College Ready + Credit. Each level indicates a different range of abilities and college readiness. The higher you score, the greater educational or employment options you have.
